The best travel umbrella for you largely depends on where and when you’ll often use it. But the last thing you want is to have to test your umbrella for the first time while on vacation.

After dramatic technical failures, we’ve tossed one too many umbrellas into public trash cans (popped hinges! Ripped fabric! Sound familiar?). So, we decided it was high time for a more methodical approach to finding an excellent travel umbrella. We’ve narrowed down the field to 10 umbrellas, which we’re confident packing in our bags when we hit the road.

Best Compact Travel Umbrellas

Traveler type: Carry-on only is your travel mantra, but you want something a little sturdier than traditional budget options.

These compact travel umbrellas are made for travelers who want something small and light that also delivers a higher quality than budget options, with automatic open-and-close functionality and more durable construction.

EEZ-Y Compact Travel Umbrella

EEZ-Y Compact Travel Umbrella in green, best travel umbrella
Amazon

As far as compact umbrellas go, this one delivers solid construction for its price tag. The umbrella folds to 11 inches and weighs just over 14 ounces for easy packing. Its not-your-average-mini-umbrella construction, including a double canopy with nine ribs, adds durability in wind gusts.

Davek Solo Umbrella

Davek Solo Umbrella in black, collapsed and held together with a velcro strap, best travel umbrella
Amazon

A bit heavier (1 pound 2 ounces) and longer (11.75 inches) than the EEZ-Y model, the Davek Solo makes up for the added weight and space with a wind-resistant frame designed to withstand more than a breeze. It’s a little pricier than your traditional mini umbrella; however, the brand’s Loss Protection Card offers you 50 percent off a new umbrella if you lose yours, and there’s a lifetime guarantee to protect you in case of mechanical problems.

Most Durable Travel Umbrellas

Traveler type: You don’t mind the extra weight if it means your umbrella won’t turn inside out as often.

If you’re the type of traveler who always seems to be wrestling with your umbrella in the slightest breeze, these umbrellas are for you. These travel umbrellas are made to withstand wind thanks to details like venting systems of overlapping fabric layers, additional springs at joints, and more robust materials.

Blunt Metro Travel Umbrella

Blunt Metro Travel Umbrella in blue, best travel umbrella
Amazon

While it’s a little longer than other travel umbrellas (14 inches), this Blunt model is still light at just over 12 ounces. It has been designed to withstand winds up to 55 miles per hour and has blunt edges, so it won’t puncture holes in anything when you stash it in your luggage (or hurt passersby in crowded cities). Despite its manual close, we also found that this umbrella had the smoothest opening and closing of any umbrella we’ve ever tried.

GustBuster Metro

GustBuster Metro in black
Amazon

Like the Blunt Metro, the GustBuster Metro is designed to withstand 55-mile-per-hour gusts. Its double canopy waterproof construction also makes it one that can protect you from the heavy rains that often accompany the wind. At 16 inches and 1.1 pounds, it’s one of the bigger options on this list, but if you’re looking for your sturdiest option, this is it.

Best Cheap Travel Umbrellas

Traveler type: You always leave your umbrella behind at restaurants, on trains, in cabs….

While these umbrellas aren’t the toughest, you won’t mind losing them. Fortunately, some of the most inexpensive umbrellas are also the lightest and most packable, meaning you’ll almost always have space for them in your luggage or day bag.

Totes TRX Manual Mini Trekker

Totes TRX Manual Mini Trekker in a multi-color pattern
Amazon

Coming in at eight ounces and 6.5 inches when folded, this option from Totes is one of the best mini umbrellas—ideal for throwing in your day bag if there’s a chance of rain. It also doubles as a shade source during warmer days with built-in sun guard UPF 50 protection. With nearly a dozen colors and patterns, you can find the one that best matches your travel outfits.

Lewis N. Clark Travel Umbrella

Lewis N. Clark Travel Umbrella in light blue
Amazon

This 10-ounce, 10.75-inch-long umbrella will likely turn inside out on you when it gets windy, but the good news is that it’s proven to pop back into shape time and time again easily. It’s also easier to close with an auto open/close button.

Best Travel Umbrellas for Heavy Rain

Traveler type: Even a monsoon won’t stop you from exploring on your trip.

If you know you’re going to a particularly rainy destination or must keep your outfit completely dry in a storm, look for an umbrella with a larger canopy. The tradeoff for better coverage is often a longer umbrella and more weight.

Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella

Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella in black
Amazon

Coated with Teflon, this umbrella dries faster than umbrellas without a Teflon coating, so you can easily stash it in your bag when the rain (hopefully) stops. The double-vented canopy gives this umbrella extra flex that helps it stand up to powerful gusts. Measuring 11.5 inches long and weighing under a pound, this Repel umbrella is still a relatively small, light option.

Bodyguard Windproof Travel Umbrella

Bodyguard Windproof Travel Umbrella in several colors
Amazon

Reinforced with ten flexible ribs for higher winds, this umbrella is another Teflon-coated option, ensuring water runs off your umbrella and not onto you. The 46.5-inch canopy is slightly larger than the Repel’s, giving you added protection (or allowing you to squeeze in another travel companion if you feel like sharing). It is, however, an inch longer.

Best Large Umbrellas for Couples

Traveler type: You and your companion don’t mind huddling together to stay out of the rain.

Ultra-packable umbrellas are often designed for one person, meaning if you’re traveling with family, you might want to equip each member with their own. However, vacationers traveling in pairs can get around packing multiples with these umbrellas designed to shelter two.

Prospo 62 Inch Large Travel Umbrella

The Prospo 62 Inch Large Travel Umbrella in black in the forefront, with four smaller color options in the upper right corner
Amazon

With an oversized canopy (62 inches), this umbrella has plenty of room to fit two but folds up to only 15 inches so it won’t take up space in your bag.

Kalolary 62 Inch Extra Oversize Large Compact Golf Umbrella

Kalolary 62 Inch Extra Oversize Large Compact Golf Umbrella in black with yellow trim
Amazon

With a 62-inch diameter, this umbrella has plenty of room for two people. The best part? It closes up to 11.8 inches, putting it on par with more compact travel umbrellas. While it’s a bit heavier at just over a pound, the size of it open outweighs the extra weight.

Safety is probably the last thing on your mind when you’re packing for a trip, but it should factor into your packing list, especially if you’re traveling solo. Adding a few small gadgets to your bag, like a portable door lock or a carbon monoxide detector, could save your life on your next trip.

Don’t leave home without these six essential travel safety products.

Sabre Portable Door Lock

Ensure no one can access your hotel room (even if they have a key) with the Sabre Portable Door Lock. This small but mighty gadget works on most doors and prevents intruders from getting in from the outside.

No tools are required to use the door lock, which can be set up within minutes.

Travel Carbon Monoxide Detector

Cases of carbon monoxide poisoning at hotels have been in the news recently. Hotels may not always have working carbon monoxide detectors in every guest room—so protect yourself by bringing your own.

Kidde’s Carbon Monoxide detector is small and can be set up anywhere, plus the battery lasts for 10 years (so no need to worry about making sure it’s charged).

Personal Safety Alarm

Solo travelers should pack a personal safety alarm that they can use in a threatening situation. This alarm by Birdie can be worn on a keychain for easy access. Pull the top pin to activate a loud siren and flashing strobe to draw attention to you and scare off attackers.

Hidden Camera Detector

Worried about being watched in your vacation rental? Pack a hidden camera detector to find any audio or video devices in a room, no matter how small.

Read our guide on checking for hidden cameras for further tips on how to find secret recording devices.

AAA Road Trip Kit

If you’re headed out on a road trip, especially to isolated locations, you should always pack an emergency kit in your car. This kit, created by AAA, has everything you might need if you get break down or get into an accident.

The compact carrying case houses 76 preparedness items, including a booster cable, air compressor, poncho, and bandages.

Power Bank and Emergency Light

Having a dead cell phone can certainly be a safety risk—you won’t be able to call for help in an emergency or navigate yourself out of a bad situation. Pack the NRG Emergency Light and Power Bank, which can fully charge your phone or other electronics.

It also doubles as a flashlight, another essential item for your emergency toolkit, so you can utilize it during a fire, earthquake, or power outage to light your escape path out of a hotel room.

Footwear is one of the most complicated packing categories. Shoes and boots take up a lot of space in your bag, but packing an uncomfortable pair can negatively impact your trip.

When considering which shoes to pack, try to pick multipurpose options. Can you pick a pair of stylish sneakers that you can also wear to a nice dinner? Can your running shoes pull double duty in the gym and on a sightseeing tour?

To save space, don’t forget to utilize the interior of your shoes when packing―stuff the inside of your shoes with socks, for example. Wearing your heaviest (or bulkiest) boots on the plane can also help.

Follow this footwear packing list to help decide what shoes to bring on your next trip.

Casual Walking Shoes

A pair of casual walking shoes will serve you well on any trip. These shoes should be comfortable enough to walk for miles in but stylish enough that you won’t mind wearing them all day (and night) in a fashionable city.

SmarterTravel Pick: Seavees’ Sixty Six Sneakers’, available for men and women, are low profile and stylish. Equipped with a cushy memory foam footbed, airflow channels for cooling, and a soft cotton canvas exterior, these shoes are both lightweight and comfortable.

Workout Sneakers

Pack a good pair of workout shoes if you’ll be hitting the hotel gym, running, or just want a truly supportive sneaker for walking. Look for lightweight but cushioned ones so that they’ll be comfortable but won’t take up much room in your luggage.

SmarterTravel Pick: Nike’s Vaporfly Shoes, available for men and women, is one of the brand’s lightest sneakers, making it easy to pack.

Hiking Boots or Shoes

Hiking boots or shoes are non-negotiable if you’re headed on a hiking trip. If you’re flying to your vacation, consider wearing your boots on the plane. You can always unlace them to make them more comfortable during the flight―and you’ll be thankful you have them with you if your luggage gets lost. (No one wants to break in new boots on a hiking trip.)

SmarterTravel Pick: Merrell’s Antora 3 Mid Waterproof, available for men and women, weigh around 10 ounces per boot. These lightweight boots are designed to feel like a sneaker but offer ankle support and waterproofing.

Waterproof Boots

Don’t let a little wet weather trap you inside your hotel for your vacation. If the forecast calls for rain or snow at your destination, pack waterproof boots to help you stay warm and dry.

SmarterTravel Pick (Women): Vionic’s Evergreen Ankle Boots feature a water-resistant upper that repels moisture. Inside, a unique Vio-Pod outsole provides cushioning right where you need it. The slip-on style makes these boots perfect for flying, as you can easily take them off for security screening.

SmarterTravel Pick (Men): Bogs’ Kicker Chelsea boots are not only waterproof but they are also insulated to keep you warm in wet and chilly conditions.

Dress Shoes

When your itinerary includes a wedding, an important meeting, or a fancy restaurant, you’ll need to pack a pair of dress shoes to complete your outfit. Choose a versatile pair that you can walk in (or dance in) comfortably, as you never know what your night will bring in a new city.

SmarterTravel Pick (Women): Part of Vivaia’s “running heels” collection, Vivaia’s Melody Pro High Heels are designed to be comfortable enough that you could safely sprint in them. Made from a stretchy knit fabric, these heels expand to fit your feet. A blister-preventing heel patch and padded insole both add to the comfort factor.

SmarterTravel Pick (Men): Allen Edmonds’ Strand Oxford Dress Sneaker is a sneaker disguised as a dress shoe. The cap toe and Oxford styling make this shoe appropriate for almost any outfit, and the supportive removable insole provides shock absorption and all-day comfort.

Flip Flops or Sandals

iradzvonkovska | Adobe Stock

Whether you’re headed to the beach or hotel pool, you’ll want to pack a pair of flip-flops or sandals that can get wet. Bonus: You can wear your sandals around the hotel room if you don’t want to pack slippers.

SmarterTravel Pick: Teva’s Original Universal Sandals were created by a Grand Canyon river guide and can handle any water activity. Velcro straps provide a custom fit while keeping your shoes secure during adventures.

Slippers

Pixel-Shot | Adobe Stock

If the thought of walking barefoot on a hotel floor grosses you out, slip a pair of packable slippers in your bag. Pro move: change into slippers on the plane for peak comfort during a long-haul flight.

SmarterTravel Pick: Deerfoams Layla Ballerina Slippers fold down flat, making them easy to pack. For men, the Rocky Slipper is an equally packable option.

We asked experts—a spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) as well as the former team physician for the Chicago Bulls, White Sox, and Joffrey Ballet—about shoes that are good for your feet. Here’s what shoes they recommend you pack on your next walking-intensive trip.

What to Look for in a Healthy Travel Shoe

“Healthy travel shoes should have arch support, a thicker sole, and shock absorption. A breathable fabric is a bonus. Sneakers should be your go-to when traveling. A casual sneaker should do the trick without weighing down your bags,” says APMA Podiatrist and spokesperson Dr. Priya Parthasarathy.

“If you have to do open-toed, avoid flip-flops and do a more supportive sandal. Something thicker, with arch support and a depression in the heel. My favorite sandals for travel are Birkenstocks.”

Dr. Priya Parthasarathy tells travelers to look for the following when shoe shopping:

  • The shoe should not be able to fold completely in half.
  • You should have some flexibility in the toes but you should not be able to have the front of the shoe touch the back of the shoe.
  • It should also have a firm heel cup and should not collapse when you squeeze it.
  • A bonus is a removable arch support which will allow you to slide your orthotics or additional arch support in if needed.

Dr. Kamran S. Hamid, an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon for Loyola University Medical Center and former team physician for the Chicago Bulls, White Sox, and Joffrey Ballet also weighed in.

“In general, the best shoes for traveling are those that have adequate support and are comfortable,” says Dr. Hamid, going on to add that Hoka shoes are “tremendously light while still providing great support and cushioning. Additionally, they have a slight curvature in the front and back of the shoe which takes some stress off of the middle of the foot for long periods of walking. These are great shoes for long-distance runners that we have repurposed for patients with foot/ankle arthritis or pain.”

While water bottles are the more environmentally and economically friendly option for drinking water while you are on the go, knowing your water is safe can be challenging. You can invest in one of these filters to ensure your water is safe, giving you peace of mind no matter where your travels find you.

Types of Water Filters

Before we delve into which filters are best for traveling, it’s essential to know the difference between types of filters, and decide which one is right for you.

UV Purifiers

These purifiers use UV light to kill harmful bacteria found in water. These are usually more expensive than other filter types.

Pump Filters

Pump filters are precisely as they sound – you pump the water out of a filter.

Gravity Fed Filters

Gravity filters use two tubes connected by gravity to move the water from one bag, through the filter, to the other, clean bag.

Straw Filters

Straw filters allow you to drink the water directly from the source or from a bottle from which you have gathered the water- the filter connects to a straw, and your suction from sipping brings the water through the filter.

Tablets

Tablets go into your water and kill any damaging bacteria. Unlike filters, the effect of tablets is not immediate, you usually have to wait 4 hours or so for it to make the water safe.

Countertop Filters

Countertop filters aren’t going to come with you as you travel. However, they are a handy option for shorter excursions and when you want to filter your water at home. They typically have a well, and you filter the water as needed. These generally are the most expensive filters.

Tap Filters

Tap filters either live under your sink and connect to your pipe or attach to your faucet, a cheaper alternative to the counter top filters.

Best UV Water Filter – Steripen Adventurer

Best Multi-use Filter – Sawyer Mini

Use this ultra-compact filter in two different ways: either as a straw filter or as a squeeze filter. Choose whichever way you want to use it: by filling up the squeeze pouch with water, attaching the filter, and squeezing it out into your water bottle, or by attaching it to the included straw and sipping it from a cup or other container.

Best Gravity Purifier – Platypus Gravity Water Filter

Best Gravity Purifier - Platypus Gravity Water Filter
Amazon

The Platypus Gravity Water Filter comes in several sizes to meet all of your water filtering needs on the go. Perfect for hikes and camping, a filter connects two bags and tubes, and the water travels through the tubes by gravity.  Choose the 6L bags for large groups or smaller sizes for individuals. No matter what size you choose, they roll up into a smaller size for easier transport.

Best Pump Filter – Survivor Filter PRO

Best Pump Water Filter - Survivor Filter PRO

The Survivor Filter PRO brings back the technology of the old water pumps you’d find in every town – put the tube connected to the reservoir into the water, and pump it out through the filter and out the top into your water bottle.

Best Water Purifier Tablets – Katadyn Micropur Purification Tablets

If a filter seems too much of a hassle, you can try purification tablets like these. Simply drop them into your water and let the magic happen. However, these aren’t great if you are in a hurry for whatever, as it takes four hours for them to do the job. They filter up to 4 liters at a time.

Best Countertop Water Filter – The Well by Lang

Best Countertop Water Filter - The Well by Lang
Lang

This counter system is much too big to take with you anywhere; however, it is the perfect option for purifying water you will take with you anywhere. It will purify and mineralize your water, giving you refreshing, great-tasting water to fill your jugs or bottles.

Best Tap Filter – PUR PLUS Water Filtration System

Best Tap Filter - PUR PLUS Water Filtration System
Amazon

The PUR Plus Water Filtration System easily attaches to your tap, giving you crisp, good tasting water. It’s available in six colors, so you can match your kitchen or add a pop of color.

Which Water Filter is Right for Me?

Which filter is right for you depends on your preferences and what you need it for. If you are planning on a long camping/hiking trip, a bigger portable filter like the Platypus Gravity Water Filter is going to be the better option. If you want something to carry with you at all times when you need clean water in a pinch, a straw like the LifeStraw is all you need. (be aware, it may be alarming to sip dirty water without seeing it filtered, so if you are squeamish this option may not be for you). If you are just looking for a way to get clean, safe drinking water at home to take with you, the Well by Lang is your best bet.

Hotel hair dryers, even in the nicest resorts, are universally terrible. They’re loud and simultaneously manage to fry your hair while still taking forever to dry it. Packing your own hair tools is worth sacrificing a bit of suitcase space if it saves both time and your hair.

Whether you’re headed on a road trip or flying internationally, these are the seven best hair tools for travel.

Dyson Supersonic Origin Hair Dryer

Dyson Supersonic Origin Hair Dryer, a great hair dryer for travel
Dyson

Don’t want to wake up everyone in the vacation rental when you dry your hair? Pack Dyson’s Supersonic Origin Hair Dryer, which is quieter than most versions. The Supersonic Origin is also a serious timesaver—the powerful 1,600w motor can dry your hair in half the time.

Despite the power, this hair dryer is less damaging than normal hair dryers, featuring an intelligent sensor that measures airflow temperature over 40 times to prevent extreme heat damage, leaving hair shinier, smoother, and less frizzy.

The compact Supersonic Origin has a magnetic styling concentrator attachment, making it great for travel. This one is best for domestic trips, as it is not dual voltage.

Heatless Curling Rod Headband

Pink and blue Heatless Curling Rod Headband, a excellent travel hair styling tool

Do your hair while you sleep with a Heatless Curling Rod Headband. Simply wrap your hair around the headband, which will effortlessly create beautiful curls (no heat required).

You can even use it on the plane so you arrive looking stylish.

Mini Collapsible Hair Curler

Amazon

This tiny hair curler is perfectly portable and folds to half the size of a regular curling iron (it also weighs half as much). The dual voltage curler can be used internationally without needing a power adapter (or worrying about blowing a fuse).

The handle locks into place, so it won’t collapse while you’re doing your hair.

Dyson Airstrait

Dyson

Why pack a hair straightener and a hair dryer when you can have both in one with Dyson’s Airstrait? This unique tool uses air (rather than hot plates) to create a sleek style without heat damage.

The Airstrait can be used on wet hair to simultaneously dry and straighten, saving time in your routine and letting you spend more time exploring (and less time on your hair). Use it on dry hair for easy touchups—the high-definition LCD screen makes it easy to change the temperature and airflow settings.

A velvet heat-resistant mat is included with the Airstrait, so you can wrap it up and pack it in your suitcase immediately after using it.

Drybar The Baby Brush Crush Mini

Amazon

The multitasking Baby Brush Crush Mini from Drybar can be used as a straightening iron and a paddle brush. Go as hot or cool as you need to—the digital display lets you change the temperature with just a button.

With automatic dual voltage conversion and a 60-minute automatic safety shut-off, you won’t have to worry about using this abroad (or trying to remember if you turned it off before leaving the hotel room).

Universal Collapsible Hair Dryer Diffuser

Amazon

Light packers who don’t want to deal with bringing a hair dryer will love this universal collapsible hair dryer diffuser. The lightweight silicone diffuser can be used on any hotel hair dryer to distribute heat and air evenly, reducing frizz and protecting your hair from damage.

When you’re not using it, it packs down nearly flat for easy transport.

Dyson Airwrap

When you’re traveling for a big event and you need to look good, pack the Dyson Airwrap. This multi-styler will give you a straight-out-of-the-salon style with minimal effort. The Airwrap comes with attachments that can quickly create different styles, from curly to straight.

The Airwrap automatically measures airflow temperature over 40 times a second to keep the temperature under 302 degrees Fahrenheit and reduce heat damage.

The included carrying case makes it easy to keep the attachments organized while traveling, and the top even doubles as a nonslip mat for your tool. The Airwrap is best for road trips, as it’s not dual voltage.

Travel often involves walking (and standing) much more than you typically do at home. Packing the right footwear can make all the difference in your comfort as you tread new paths abroad. If there’s no money in your budget to buy new shoes for your trip, and the ones you own aren’t quite as comfortable as you’d like, here are some ways to make the footwear you already own more comfortable.

Add Insoles

Wish your shoes had a bit more support? Add an orthotic insole to increase your favorite footwear’s ergonomic factor. Vionic’s Slim Fit Insoles are podiatrist-designed and an affordable alternative to custom-made orthotics.

The slender insoles are designed to fit in all types of shoes, from flats to heels, and help realign the foot to its natural position. The insoles add extra support and shock absorption that can help reduce pain and fatigue.

Shoe Stretchers

Hanging on to an old pair of boots that are just a bit too tight? A shoe stretcher can add enough room to make them the perfect fit. Shoe stretchers can make footwear slightly longer and wider in the toe box, but don’t expect them to add an entire size or two.

Heel Grips

If you have shoes that are too loose and rub at your heels causing blisters, try using a pair of heel grips. These inexpensive soft gel inserts stick to the back of your shoe, filling in any extra space and helping to prevent friction.

How to Pick the Best Footwear for Travel

If you’re shopping for new shoes for your next trip, there are a few crucial things to look for. Dr. Alissa Kuizinas, DPM, tells SmarterTravel, “The most important aspects of footwear for travel are the shape and flexibility of the sole of the shoe and the shape of the toe box.” Dr. Kuizinas recommends choosing footwear that “either have a flexible sole and bend easily, especially at the ball of the foot, or are stiffer soled but provide a rocker effect in the forefoot.”

Make sure shoes have plenty of room in the toe before buying. According to Dr. Kuizinas, “The toe box shape is also very important as most shoes are far too narrow in the toe box, causing less efficient walking, which can lead to muscle fatigue, stiffness, and ultimately issues like plantar fasciitis. It is best to look for a wide toe box shape that fans out a bit towards the end of the shoe rather than tapering.”
