Bulky jackets are the bane of cold-weather travelers. If your coat isn’t taking up precious space in your carry-on, you’ll have to lug it around the airport to avoid sweating profusely and looking like a nervous security risk. Here are 10 of the best packable, lightweight winter jackets for travelers that will keep you feeling warm and looking stylish on the road.

Columbia Bugaboo II Fleece Interchange 3-in-1 Jacket

REI

Travel clothes that do double duty are invaluable, and this jacket from Columbia gives you three outerwear options in one. The waterproof shell and fleece lining can be worn independently or zipped together for extra warmth. Although thin and lightweight, the outer shell is designed to lock in body heat, perfect for rainy autumn days. The removable hood and adjustable cuffs add extra customization.

Arc’teryx Men’s Atom Hoody

Arc'teryx

The Arc’teryx Men’s Atom Hoody is a packable jacket that delivers the warmth needed in a whole host of situations and environments. Insulated with lightweight, water-resistant Coreloft™, this hoody maintains thermal performance if exposed to moisture, and compresses into the tiny nooks of your backpack when not in use.

L.L.Bean Quilted Riding Jacket

L.L.Bean Quilted Riding Jacket
L.L. Bean

Most easy-to-pack winter jackets look like activewear and are tough to pull off on a city trip, but L.L.Bean’s Quilted Riding Jacket is the ultimate winter coat that can do both. Its classic design goes with any outfit and won’t make you look like a tourist who just wandered into town off a hike. Thanks to the insulated synthetic lining, it will keep you warm without weighing you (or your suitcase) down. Want to layer this jacket? It has adjustable waist tabs that let you customize the fit based on what you’re wearing.

The North Face ThermoBall Eco Hoodie 2.0

The North Face

The ThermoBall Eco Hoodie, available for women and men, is water-resistant and made of recycled polyester and nylon, made with ThermoBall™ Eco Insulation that performs even in wet conditions. Best of all, this jacket packs down into its own chest pocket, which transforms into a zippered carrying case when not in use.

Columbia Women’s Mighty Lite Hooded Jacket

Omni-Heat lining and insulation give Columbia’s Mighty Lite Jacket plenty of warmth. It comes in a range of colors and can be found for a surprisingly low price when on sale. This lightweight coat won’t add much bulk to your bag and has a handy interior security pocket to stow valuables.

Obermeyer Women’s Tuscany II Jacket

Dick's Sporting Goods

Based in the snow sports mecca of Aspen, Colorado, since 1947, Obermeyer knows a thing or two about cold and wet weather. It’s developed a patented HydroBlock Sport fabric tested to resist nearly 400 inches of rain (and roll stain-causing liquids right off). Find it in the Tuscany II Jacket, which also uses another unique Obermeyer material: Thermore Classic insulation, which is thin and light but still warm. The hood is removable and adjustable, as is the faux fur trim.

Patagonia PrimaLoft Nano Puff Coat

Models wearing the men's and women's sizes of the Patagonia PrimaLoft Nano Puff Coat
Backcountry

Patagonia’s PrimaLoft Nano Puff Hoody (available for men and women) is the lightest jacket I’ve ever owned. The women’s version weighs just 10 ounces (the men’s is 12.8 ounces), yet is ultra-warm and water-resistant. Unlike some other methods of insulation, you can feel good about this jacket: Its 60-g PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco is made from 100% post-consumer recycled polyester.

The Antora Triclimate Jacket

The North Face

The North Face’s versatile Antora Triclimate Jacket (available for women and men) is a three-in-one coat that’s perfect for travel: You can wear the waterproof shell or comfy inner liner by themselves, or combine them to make a warm winter jacket. The hood and wrist cuffs are adjustable for a better fit and to accomodate ski and general winter gear. This breathable coat is designed for hiking and other outdoor activities.

Lululemon Pack It Down Jacket

The Pack It Down Jacket can be folded up into its own small carrying case, making it one of the best packable down jackets for women. The fabric is weather-resistant, and the 700-fill-power goose down is certified to the Responsible Down Standard. You can remove the hood to further cut down on weight and space.

Arc’teryx Men’s Cerium Hoody

Model showing two angles of the Arc’teryx Men’s Cerium Hoody in black

The Cerium Hoody from Arcteryx is incredibly lightweight—just 11.9 ounces—yet it’s surprisingly warm thanks to its combination of goose down and synthetic insulation. (Note that on rainy or extremely cold days, it’s best combined with a weatherproof shell.)

Cheaper Amtrak tickets and more time to explore your destination—Amtrak’s Night Owl fares are a win-win. Amtrak recently expanded these ultra-cheap fares (priced as low as $5) to more times and routes, making it even more convenient to travel for less.

The stately White Elephant has been a fixture of the Nantucket scene since it was opened by a local socialite in the 1920s. The property recently celebrated its 100th birthday with a complete renovation and restoration and has since emerged with a fresh, modern feel befitting the location.

The refresh upgraded the hotel’s rooms and common spaces with Nantucket-specific elements—like ceilings painted the same hue the island’s skies turn in the summer and grasscloth wallcoverings inspired by local dune grasses. The effect is luxury without stuffiness—as evidenced by the whimsical touches throughout the rooms like elephant door pulls and pillows.

The Location

White Elephant hotel and adjacent harbor full of boat on Nantucket, Massachusetts
White Elephant Nantucket

On an island where bringing a vehicle over can be prohibitively expensive, location is key, and the White Elephant occupies one of the best spots on Nantucket. The prime location on Nantucket Harbor puts guests within easy walking distance to ferries to the mainland and just a few blocks from the cobblestone streets, boutique shops, and restaurants of downtown.

No island vacation is complete without a trip to the beach. Fortunately, Children’s Beach, a calm sandy area with a playground, is right beside the hotel, making it a great spot for families.

Jetties Beach, one of the most popular beaches on the island, is an easy one-mile bike ride from the property.

Amenities

People riding bikes that they rented from White Elephant Nantucket
White Elephant Nantucket

The resort makes it easy for guests to get out and explore Nantucket, offering free Priority bicycles, complimentary Wave public transportation passes, and an in-town courtesy vehicle service that will drive guests anywhere they need to go. Guests can also enter a twice-daily raffle to win a loaner BMW that they can borrow for up to four hours.

A heated pool is open on-property from late May to September, perfect for those who don’t want to brave the chilly Atlantic waters.

In the morning, complimentary coffee, tea, and pastries are offered for guests looking for a pre-breakfast bite. In the afternoon, a daily port and cheese hour provides a chance to mingle and unwind before dinner.

If you need to work off all that free food, the White Elephant’s two fitness centers are open 24 hours a day and are thoughtfully stocked with earphones, chilled towels, and hydration drinks.

The White Elephant caters to families with a variety of kid-friendly amenities including:

  • Beach toys
  • Cribs and Pack ‘n Plays
  • Radio Flyer Wagons
  • Strollers
  • Check-in gifts for kids
  • Nantucket kids’ adventure guide

The Rooms

A cozy green guest room at White Elephant hotel on Nantucket, Massachusetts
White Elephant Nantucket

The sprawling property is broken down into five different accommodation options

Residences

Designed to feel like a private vacation home (but with all the amenities of a resort) the Residences offer one, two, or three-bedroom rentals, all with kitchens and living rooms.

Inn

The cozy Inn features standard guestrooms and suites in a building two blocks from the main hotel.

Harborside Hotel

The newly renovated Harborside Hotel features 54 guestrooms and suites, some with fireplaces and harbor views.

Downtown Lofts

Feel like you have your own pied-à-terre on Nantucket with the White Elephant’s Downtown Lofts. These two spacious house rentals are perfect for groups or family getaways and include access to all the amenities of the main resort.

Dining

Outdoor patio dining area at Brant Point Grill at White Elephant hotel on Nantucket, Massachusetts
White Elephant Nantucket

With a picturesque location overlooking Nantucket Harbor, White Elephant’s main restaurant, Brant Point Grill, is the place to go any time of day or night. The breakfast menu offers options from the healthy (a fresh fruit plate with mint syrup)  to the indulgent (a brioche french toast served with whipped mascarpone that you can pair with the restaurant’s signature Lobster Bloody Mary).

At dinner, locally sourced ingredients, like baby heirloom tomatoes from nearby Bartlett’s Farms, highlight the ever-changing seasonal menu, especially when accompanied by a bottle of wine from the restaurant’s extensive cellar.

For a change of scenery, guests can take the Wauwinet Lady boat to the White Elephant’s sister property, the Wauwinet, for lunch or dinner at the AAA Five-Diamond restaurant, Topper’s.

For something more casual, a poolside snack bar serves up light bites, ice cream, and smoothies.

Price and How to Book

Room rates start at approximately $350 and can be booked on SmarterTravel Hotels. The White Elephant is open seasonally from April through the end of October, reopening for Thanksgiving through the first weekend in December,

Safety is probably the last thing on your mind when you’re packing for a trip, but it should factor into your packing list, especially if you’re traveling solo. Adding a few small gadgets to your bag, like a portable door lock or a carbon monoxide detector, could save your life on your next trip.

Don’t leave home without these six essential travel safety products.

Sabre Portable Door Lock

Ensure no one can access your hotel room (even if they have a key) with the Sabre Portable Door Lock. This small but mighty gadget works on most doors and prevents intruders from getting in from the outside.

No tools are required to use the door lock, which can be set up within minutes.

Travel Carbon Monoxide Detector

Cases of carbon monoxide poisoning at hotels have been in the news recently. Hotels may not always have working carbon monoxide detectors in every guest room—so protect yourself by bringing your own.

Kidde’s Carbon Monoxide detector is small and can be set up anywhere, plus the battery lasts for 10 years (so no need to worry about making sure it’s charged).

Personal Safety Alarm

Solo travelers should pack a personal safety alarm that they can use in a threatening situation. This alarm by Birdie can be worn on a keychain for easy access. Pull the top pin to activate a loud siren and flashing strobe to draw attention to you and scare off attackers.

Hidden Camera Detector

Worried about being watched in your vacation rental? Pack a hidden camera detector to find any audio or video devices in a room, no matter how small.

Read our guide on checking for hidden cameras for further tips on how to find secret recording devices.

AAA Road Trip Kit

If you’re headed out on a road trip, especially to isolated locations, you should always pack an emergency kit in your car. This kit, created by AAA, has everything you might need if you get break down or get into an accident.

The compact carrying case houses 76 preparedness items, including a booster cable, air compressor, poncho, and bandages.

Power Bank and Emergency Light

Having a dead cell phone can certainly be a safety risk—you won’t be able to call for help in an emergency or navigate yourself out of a bad situation. Pack the NRG Emergency Light and Power Bank, which can fully charge your phone or other electronics.

It also doubles as a flashlight, another essential item for your emergency toolkit, so you can utilize it during a fire, earthquake, or power outage to light your escape path out of a hotel room.

Footwear is one of the most complicated packing categories. Shoes and boots take up a lot of space in your bag, but packing an uncomfortable pair can negatively impact your trip.

When considering which shoes to pack, try to pick multipurpose options. Can you pick a pair of stylish sneakers that you can also wear to a nice dinner? Can your running shoes pull double duty in the gym and on a sightseeing tour?

To save space, don’t forget to utilize the interior of your shoes when packing―stuff the inside of your shoes with socks, for example. Wearing your heaviest (or bulkiest) boots on the plane can also help.

Follow this footwear packing list to help decide what shoes to bring on your next trip.

Casual Walking Shoes

A pair of casual walking shoes will serve you well on any trip. These shoes should be comfortable enough to walk for miles in but stylish enough that you won’t mind wearing them all day (and night) in a fashionable city.

SmarterTravel Pick: Seavees’ Sixty Six Sneakers’, available for men and women, are low profile and stylish. Equipped with a cushy memory foam footbed, airflow channels for cooling, and a soft cotton canvas exterior, these shoes are both lightweight and comfortable.

Workout Sneakers

Pack a good pair of workout shoes if you’ll be hitting the hotel gym, running, or just want a truly supportive sneaker for walking. Look for lightweight but cushioned ones so that they’ll be comfortable but won’t take up much room in your luggage.

SmarterTravel Pick: Nike’s Vaporfly Shoes, available for men and women, is one of the brand’s lightest sneakers, making it easy to pack.

Hiking Boots or Shoes

Hiking boots or shoes are non-negotiable if you’re headed on a hiking trip. If you’re flying to your vacation, consider wearing your boots on the plane. You can always unlace them to make them more comfortable during the flight―and you’ll be thankful you have them with you if your luggage gets lost. (No one wants to break in new boots on a hiking trip.)

SmarterTravel Pick: Merrell’s Antora 3 Mid Waterproof, available for men and women, weigh around 10 ounces per boot. These lightweight boots are designed to feel like a sneaker but offer ankle support and waterproofing.

Waterproof Boots

Don’t let a little wet weather trap you inside your hotel for your vacation. If the forecast calls for rain or snow at your destination, pack waterproof boots to help you stay warm and dry.

SmarterTravel Pick (Women): Vionic’s Evergreen Ankle Boots feature a water-resistant upper that repels moisture. Inside, a unique Vio-Pod outsole provides cushioning right where you need it. The slip-on style makes these boots perfect for flying, as you can easily take them off for security screening.

SmarterTravel Pick (Men): Bogs’ Kicker Chelsea boots are not only waterproof but they are also insulated to keep you warm in wet and chilly conditions.

Dress Shoes

When your itinerary includes a wedding, an important meeting, or a fancy restaurant, you’ll need to pack a pair of dress shoes to complete your outfit. Choose a versatile pair that you can walk in (or dance in) comfortably, as you never know what your night will bring in a new city.

SmarterTravel Pick (Women): Part of Vivaia’s “running heels” collection, Vivaia’s Melody Pro High Heels are designed to be comfortable enough that you could safely sprint in them. Made from a stretchy knit fabric, these heels expand to fit your feet. A blister-preventing heel patch and padded insole both add to the comfort factor.

SmarterTravel Pick (Men): Allen Edmonds’ Strand Oxford Dress Sneaker is a sneaker disguised as a dress shoe. The cap toe and Oxford styling make this shoe appropriate for almost any outfit, and the supportive removable insole provides shock absorption and all-day comfort.

Flip Flops or Sandals

A hand holding a pair of sandals with the beach out of focus in the background
iradzvonkovska | Adobe Stock

Whether you’re headed to the beach or hotel pool, you’ll want to pack a pair of flip-flops or sandals that can get wet. Bonus: You can wear your sandals around the hotel room if you don’t want to pack slippers.

SmarterTravel Pick: Teva’s Original Universal Sandals were created by a Grand Canyon river guide and can handle any water activity. Velcro straps provide a custom fit while keeping your shoes secure during adventures.

Slippers

Pink slippers on the floor with feet out of focus in the background
Pixel-Shot | Adobe Stock

If the thought of walking barefoot on a hotel floor grosses you out, slip a pair of packable slippers in your bag. Pro move: change into slippers on the plane for peak comfort during a long-haul flight.

SmarterTravel Pick: Deerfoams Layla Ballerina Slippers fold down flat, making them easy to pack. For men, the Rocky Slipper is an equally packable option.

As the U.S. government remains unable to agree on a funding bill, a government shutdown will likely begin on October 1 at 12:01 a.m. unless a deal is reached by September 30. The shutdown would last for an unknown amount of time until funding can be passed.

The last federal government shutdown began in late 2018 and lasted for 34 days before ending in early 2019. During this time, a significant impact on travel was seen.

Here’s what travelers should be prepared for if the government shuts down again.

Air Travel

Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts on October 23, 2012. Logan Airport is the largest airport in New England.
leekris | Adobe Stock

Air Traffic Controllers and TSA agents are considered “essential” government employees and will still be required to work during a shutdown. However, these essential workers will not be getting paid until the shutdown ends—during the last shutdown, many employees called out of work (some to work other jobs to make ends meet). This resulted in air travel issues, including a ground stop at New York’s LaGuardia Airport after 10 air traffic controllers called out for the day.

At one point during the last shutdown, 10 percent of TSA agents nationwide didn’t show up to work, leading to long security lines at many airports.

The shutdown could have lingering effects on the air travel industry long after it ends, as the hiring and training of air traffic controllers would be halted during the shutdown.

National Parks

National Parks will likely be officially closed during a government shutdown. However, gates may remain open at some parks so travelers can enter at their own risk. Park rangers will probably not be available to help if needed, and all services inside parks, including restrooms and visitor centers, will be locked and inaccessible.

According to the National Parks Conservation Association, about a third of national parks closed completely during the last shutdown. Many parks that stayed open reported vandalism, overflowing trashcans and restrooms, and damage due to unsupervised visitors.

Does Travel Insurance Cover a Government Shutdown?

Airport lock down, Flights cancelled
structuresxx | Adobe Stock

If you’re dreading long airport lines and want to cancel your trip, you’ll need to have purchased a Cancel for Any Reason travel insurance policy for it to be covered due to a government shutdown.

According to travel insurance site Squaremouth, even Travel Delay coverage won’t apply during a government shutdown, explaining, “The most common covered reason under Travel Delay is a delay of a common carrier due to inclement weather or a mechanical breakdown. Other covered reasons include being involved in a traffic accident on the way to the airport, lost or stolen passports or travel documents, or an injury or sickness that causes you to be late. However, delays in line for a security checkpoint are not covered.” This also means that if you encounter an unexpectedly long security line due to the shutdown and miss your flight, you won’t be able to get compensation.

Global Entry is currently the fastest way to return to the United States after a trip abroad. This program, available through the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency, prescreens travelers and allows them to skip the often lengthy customs lines at airports and other border crossings. The reentry process has gotten even faster for Global Entry members, thanks to the launch of a new mobile app.

Previously, members would visit a Global Entry kiosk to have their photograph taken before proceeding to a CBP officer for verification.

Now, Global Entry members can download the Global Entry app from the Google Play or Apple App store and skip the kiosk entirely. Simply take a selfie using the app, and you’ll receive a mobile receipt to show the CBP officers to complete the entry process.

“The new Global Entry mobile application leverages the latest technologies in order to enhance security while further improving the travel experience for CBP’s trusted travelers,” said CBP’s Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner Troy A. Miller, in a news statement.

The app is free to download but can only be used by Global Entry members. A Global Entry membership costs $100 for a five-year membership.

Where Can You Use the Global Entry Mobile App?

The Global Entry app can only currently be used at seven airports:

  • Seattle Tacoma International Airport (Seattle, Washington)
  • Los Angeles International Airport (Los Angeles, California)
  • Miami International Airport (Miami, Florida)
  • Orlando International Airport (Orlando, Florida)
  • Washington Dulles International Airport (Dulles, Virginia)

We asked experts—a spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) as well as the former team physician for the Chicago Bulls, White Sox, and Joffrey Ballet—about shoes that are good for your feet. Here’s what shoes they recommend you pack on your next walking-intensive trip.

What to Look for in a Healthy Travel Shoe

“Healthy travel shoes should have arch support, a thicker sole, and shock absorption. A breathable fabric is a bonus. Sneakers should be your go-to when traveling. A casual sneaker should do the trick without weighing down your bags,” says APMA Podiatrist and spokesperson Dr. Priya Parthasarathy.

“If you have to do open-toed, avoid flip-flops and do a more supportive sandal. Something thicker, with arch support and a depression in the heel. My favorite sandals for travel are Birkenstocks.”

Dr. Priya Parthasarathy tells travelers to look for the following when shoe shopping:

  • The shoe should not be able to fold completely in half.
  • You should have some flexibility in the toes but you should not be able to have the front of the shoe touch the back of the shoe.
  • It should also have a firm heel cup and should not collapse when you squeeze it.
  • A bonus is a removable arch support which will allow you to slide your orthotics or additional arch support in if needed.

Dr. Kamran S. Hamid, an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon for Loyola University Medical Center and former team physician for the Chicago Bulls, White Sox, and Joffrey Ballet also weighed in.

“In general, the best shoes for traveling are those that have adequate support and are comfortable,” says Dr. Hamid, going on to add that Hoka shoes are “tremendously light while still providing great support and cushioning. Additionally, they have a slight curvature in the front and back of the shoe which takes some stress off of the middle of the foot for long periods of walking. These are great shoes for long-distance runners that we have repurposed for patients with foot/ankle arthritis or pain.”

After paying $15 to have an awkward photo shoot in a CVS aisle, only to have my passport photos rejected twice—once for being too dark and once for being too bright—I decided there had to be a way to take your own passport photo at home. As it turns out, snapping your own passport photo is easier, cheaper, and much more convenient than going to a “professional” (a.k.a., the cashier at your local drugstore).

Websites to Help You Take Your Own Passport Photo

  • The U.S. State Department: Bureaucracy has moved into the 21st century, and even the State Department wants to help you take your own passport photo by offering a free photo cropping tool that will size your photo correctly so that you can print it yourself.
  • iVisa: If you don’t want to deal with printing your own passport pictures, or if you need a passport or visa photo for another country (which may be a different size than the U.S. passport photo), iVisa does everything for those who want to take a passport photo at home, including printing and mailing your photos directly to your house. You can also pay extra to have your photos checked to make sure that they will be approved.
  • Passport Photo Booth: For those wondering, “Can I take my own passport photo?” there’s an app for that. Passport Photo Booth (available for iOS) helps you with the photo composition needed for passport photos, showing you exactly where to pose within the frame. You can e-mail or save the image for free, or pay extra to have your passport pictures printed.

Key Passport Photo Requirements

If you’re planning to take a passport photo at home, make sure that it will meet all of the State Department’s passport photo requirements:

  • Passport pictures must be in color, not black and white.
  • No filters are allowed, no matter how good they make you look.
  • Passport photos must be “2” x 2″ (51 x 51 mm) with the head centered and sized between 1″ and 1.4″ (25 and 35 mm).” (Click here for a passport photo composition template.)
  • Remove any face coverings or masks for the photo.
  • Passport photos must be “taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance.”
  • Passport photos must be “taken in front of a plain white or off-white background.”
  • Passport photos must be “taken in full-face view directly facing the camera.”
  • When taking your own passport photo, make sure that you have a “neutral facial expression and both eyes open.”
  • Your passport picture should be “taken in clothing that you normally wear on a daily basis.”
  • “Uniforms should not be worn in your photo, except religious clothing that is worn daily.”
  • When taking your own passport photo, “do not wear a hat or head covering that obscures the hair or hairline, unless worn daily for a religious purpose. Your full face must be visible, and the head covering must not cast any shadows on your face.”
  • “Headphones, wireless hands-free devices, or similar items are not acceptable in your photo.”
  • “Eyeglasses are no longer allowed in new visa photos, except in rare circumstances when eyeglasses cannot be removed for medical reasons.”

To inform how to take your own passport photo, the State Department provides some examples of passport pictures that are and are not accepted. Check them out here.

How to Take Your Own Passport Photo

  • When taking passport pictures, get a neutral background. If you don’t have plain white walls to pose in front of at home, tape a piece of plain white poster board behind you to create a clean backdrop.
  • It’s important, when you take your own passport photo, to check the lighting. You can’t have any shadows in your passport photo, so taking it in natural daylight on a sunny day works best.
  • Get help: Selfies won’t be accepted as passport pictures, so you’ll either need to use a tripod if you want to take your own passport photo or ask a friend to snap your picture.

The hotel is less than a five-minute walk to the Christianshavn Metro, where you can utilize the city’s well-run transit system to sightsee further out in the city. From this station, guests can catch the train to the airport (no transfers required), making arrivals and departures a breeze.
